How to Make Bone Broth: A Nourishing Recipe for Your Health

Bone broth is a nutrient-rich elixir cherished for its flavor, health benefits, and versatility. Packed with collagen, minerals, and amino acids, it’s a fantastic base for soups or a nourishing drink on its own. Here’s how to make bone broth at home, step by step.

Ingredients

1. Bones: 2–3 pounds of bones (beef, chicken, pork, or fish). Use a mix of marrow, joint, and meaty bones for maximum flavor and nutrition.

2. Vegetables: 1–2 carrots, 1 onion, and 2–3 celery stalks, roughly chopped.

3. Vinegar: 2 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar to help extract minerals from the bones.

4. Herbs and spices: 2–3 garlic cloves, 2 bay leaves, and a handful of fresh herbs like parsley or thyme. ( optional )

5. Water: Enough to cover the bones by 2–3 inches.

Instructions

  • Step 1: Roast the Bones (Optional but recommended)

Roasting the bones at 400°F (200°C) for 30–40 minutes enhances the flavor of your broth. Spread the bones on a baking sheet and roast until golden brown.

  • Step 2: Prepare the Pot

Place the roasted bones in a large stockpot or turkey roaster. Add the chopped vegetables, apple cider vinegar, and any herbs or spices you prefer.

  • Step 3: Add Water

Pour in enough cold water to cover the ingredients by about 2–3 inches. Avoid overfilling, as the broth needs room to simmer.

  • Step 4: Simmer Slowly

Bring the water to a gentle boil, then reduce the heat to low and simmer. Skim off any foam or impurities that rise to the surface during the first hour.

Chicken bones: Simmer for 12–24 hours.

Beef or pork bones: Simmer for 24–48 hours.

  • Step 5: Strain the Broth

Once simmered to your satisfaction, strain the broth through a fine-mesh sieve or cheesecloth to remove solids.

  • Step 6: Cool and Store

Let the broth cool slightly, then transfer it to jars or containers. Store in the refrigerator for up to 5 days or freeze for up to 6 months. I prefer canning it!

Tips for the Perfect Bone Broth

Use quality bones: All natural raised bones provide the best flavor and nutrients.

Add variety: Incorporate feet, necks, or knuckles for extra collagen.

Season later: Avoid adding salt until you’re ready to use the broth in a recipe.
